Grandma With Grass 20 x 16 in : October 2, 2020 “Grandma With Grass” is a painting of my Grandmother. My Grandmother grew up on a vegetable farm in up-state New York in a family with ten siblings. The portrait explores my Grandmother’s natural love for gardening and human's instinctual appreciation for nature and beauty of the natural world.
Lake Feet 18 x 24 in : October 16, 2020 "Lake Feet" began as a foot study painting but turned into a style finding painting. It was through this painting that I fell in love with the beautiful shapes and colors that nature creates.
Floating Barn 3 x 4 ft : January 15, 2021 "The Floating Barn" is reminiscent of the work of Storm Thorgerson, capturing what should be physically impossible in reality. The painting is of an old Vermont dairy barn being lifted completely in one piece on stilts in order for its foundation to be modernized. The piece explores the divide between nature and artificial structures.
Bear On Trash Mountain 30 x 40 in : “Bear On Trash Mountain” is a painting based on a classic photo in my family albums. The photo of my grandmother and two of her brothers was taken at a dump in Yellowstone National Park with a bear eating trash directly in front of them. The dreamy color palette both mimics the Kodachrome slide the photo was captured on and directly contrasts the disturbing imagery of humans' impact on nature.
The Big Blue Power Wagon 3 x 4 ft : December 18, 2020 "The Big Blue Power Wagon" merges imagination with reality. The truck and the skis are real, but elements like the deer riding in the back seat are imagined. This piece allowed me to explore painting reflective surfaces and geometric subjects.
Lens-Less 20 x 16 in : April 15, 2021 A portrait of my brother in a chairlift line with his goggle lenses popped out, "Lens-Less" is how people need to see the world in order to create change; unfiltered.
Husband and Wife 3 x 4 ft : May 25, 2021 “Husband and Wife,” is a portrait of two mountain bikes that belong to my mother and father. The bikes are resting on a trail together in the forest of Poultney, Vermont on the Slate Valley Trails system. Throughout their marriage the two have biked together in races and for fun all over the world. The painting is a reference to their love of mountain biking and marriage.
Lover Goats 3 x 4 ft : April 30, 2021 “Lover Goats” is a whimsical portrait of eight goats I photographed on a farm in Virginia. The painting’s title references the state's motto “Virginia is for lovers.” Painted from multiple reference images, "Lover Goats" is meant to make people smile.
Quinny Bird 20 x 16 in : January 21, 2021 A relic of the pandemic, this work was featured on the cover of the school's art magazine "The Spectator" at the end of the 2020-2021 school year. It captures the excitement and light last spring offered people after months inside.
Focused On The Donkey 20 x 16 in : September 25, 2020 “Focused On The Donkey” was a cell phone study drawing. The hand holding the phone was drawn from observation. The painting plays with the use of detail versus more gestural strokes. "Focused On The Donkey" calls out human’s recent obsession with cell phones and the attention which we give to them versus the natural world.
Head-First 3 x 4ft: February 15, 2022 A painting of my brother diving into a lake. My own take on ”The Splash” by David Hockney.
Wake-Surfer 3 x 4ft: March 9, 2022 I pushed my use of color in this painting, using more of the modern acrylic colors like quinacridone red and phthalo blue. The varied tones in blue (water and sky) lead me to consider how to differentiate the two through textures and color.
Cucumber Boy 3 x 4ft: May 10, 2022 A portrait of my youngest brother. This is definitely one of the largest portraits I have ever made. I used this large scale as an opportunity to explore color and value as is relates to rendering people. Also played with leaving some spots less finished than others, creating obvious layers within the painting.
